Phase I and II of the Tomball Tollway & SH-249 Frontage Roads
Project Overview
The Phase I & II Tomball Tollway Extension stretches State Highway 249 from FM 2920 to the Montgomery County line, adding three continuous mainline lanes in both directions. The design also delivers new frontage roads and a 65-acre-foot storm-water basin north of the Lone Star College–Tomball campus, which moderates peak runoff and enriches the corridor’s landscape.
CMT Technical Services’ Role
CMT supplied an integrated suite of services that supported the entire delivery cycle:
- Geotechnical evaluation and laboratory testing to characterize subsurface conditions
- Pavement engineering to develop durable asphalt paving material mixes suited to Gulf-Coast soils
- Environmental field services with rapid laboratory turnaround
- Precise surveying for right-of-way acquisition and utility mapping
- Civil design support for drainage, detention, and utility adjustments
- Construction-phase observation with materials field testing for earthwork, concrete, and asphalt
- Specialty laboratory analyses such as binder rheology and concrete petrography
These coordinated efforts helped the prime contractor maintain schedule milestones and meet performance criteria.
Community Benefits
- Reduced travel time: Commuters gain a faster link between Harris and Montgomery counties.
- Freight reliability: Commercial carriers receive a smoother route to Interstate 45.
- Active-transport options: Shared-use paths along the frontage roads promote cycling and walking for neighboring residents and the Lone Star College community.
- Enhanced aesthetics: The landscaped detention basin doubles as an informal green space that elevates the corridor’s visual appeal.
